Cost sheet format in Excel
- Prime cost to selling price, with formulas
- Total and per-unit columns
- WIP and stock adjustments
- Profit as a % of cost of sales
A cost sheet sets out what a product cost to make and sell, in stages, so it is clear where the money went and what price covers it. Each stage adds one layer of cost to the one before it.
The formula
- Prime cost
Direct materials + direct labour + direct expenses- Works cost
Prime cost + factory overheads + (opening − closing WIP)- Cost of production
Works cost + administration overheads- Cost of sales
Cost of production + (opening − closing finished stock) + selling & distribution- Selling price
Cost of sales + profit
How to read a cost sheet
Prime cost is what goes directly into the product. Works cost adds what the factory spends to run. Cost of production adds the office; cost of sales adds what it takes to sell and deliver. Dividing each by the units made gives the cost per unit at every stage.
Using it to price
Quoting below cost of sales loses money on every unit; quoting below works cost loses money even before the office and sales are paid for. A job-wise cost sheet built from the BOM, job cards and actual purchase rates shows which products and customers really make money.
Questions people ask.
What is a cost sheet?
A statement showing the cost of making and selling a product in stages — prime cost, works cost, cost of production and cost of sales — in total and per unit.
What is prime cost?
Direct materials + direct labour + direct expenses — the costs that go directly into the product.
What is the difference between works cost and cost of production?
Works cost includes factory overheads; cost of production adds administration overheads to it.
How is profit shown in a cost sheet?
As a percentage of cost of sales (or of selling price); cost of sales plus profit gives the selling price.
Can I get a cost sheet format in Excel?
