A bill of materials (BOM) is the list of everything that goes into one unit of a product: raw materials, bought-out parts and sub-assemblies, each with the quantity per unit. Purchase plans from it, stores issue from it, and costing prices it.

The formula

Quantity to issue
Qty per unit × (1 + scrap % ÷ 100) × batch quantity
Line cost
Quantity to issue × rate
Cost per unit
Batch cost ÷ batch quantity

What a BOM format should have

The finished product and its revision, then for each component: level (1 for direct parts, 2 and 3 for parts of a sub-assembly), item code, description, quantity per unit, unit, scrap or wastage percent, and rate — so the same sheet gives both the issue quantity and the material cost.

From a spreadsheet BOM to one the whole factory uses

A BOM in Excel works for one person. When purchase, stores and production each keep their own copy, revisions drift apart. A BOM in an ERP is one version for everyone: approved by design, exploded into purchase requisitions, issued against job cards, and costed with live purchase rates.
