Your aggregate turnover crossed ₹5 crore in at least one year since 2017-18.
- Applies to B2B invoices, exports, supplies to SEZ, deemed exports, and credit and debit notes. B2C invoices are not e-invoiced.
- Each invoice must carry the IRN and QR code from the Invoice Registration Portal.
Rules as of October 2026. Confirm current notifications on the e-invoice portal.
E-invoicing means reporting each B2B invoice to the Invoice Registration Portal (IRP), which returns an IRN and a QR code that must be printed on the invoice. It is mandatory for businesses whose aggregate turnover crossed ₹5 crore in any financial year from 2017-18 onwards.
Who must issue e-invoices
Every registered person whose aggregate turnover exceeded ₹5 crore in any one year since 2017-18 — the test looks back, so a single good year is enough. Some categories are exempt whatever their turnover: SEZ units, insurers, banks and NBFCs, goods transport agencies, passenger transport, cinema admissions and government departments.
The 30-day reporting limit
Businesses with aggregate turnover of ₹10 crore or more must report each invoice to the IRP within 30 days of its date; the portal rejects later uploads, and the invoice is then not valid for the buyer's credit.
What is and is not e-invoiced
B2B invoices, exports, supplies to SEZ, deemed exports, and credit and debit notes are. B2C invoices, delivery challans and bills of supply are not.
