How to create SKU codes
Build them from meaningful parts: category, material, size, variant — e.g. SH-SS304-1.2-1250 for an SS 304 sheet, 1.2 mm, 1250 mm wide. Keep codes short, never reuse one, and avoid characters that look alike (O and 0).
SKU vs item code vs HSN
SKU and item code usually mean the same — your internal code for an item. HSN is the government's classification for GST and is shared by many of your SKUs; it is not a substitute for an SKU.
Example
The same work table in 4 ft and 6 ft, each in SS 202 and SS 304, is four SKUs.

Frequently asked questions
What is the full form of SKU?
Stock Keeping Unit.
Is SKU the same as item code?
In most businesses, yes — the internal unique code for an item.
Is SKU the same as HSN code?
No. HSN classifies goods for GST and covers many SKUs; an SKU identifies one exact item.
Why do duplicate SKUs cause problems?
Stock gets split across two codes, so reports show shortages and excess at the same time.
