Types of inventory in manufacturing
Raw material (steel, components, bought-out parts), work in progress (partly made items on the shop floor), finished goods (ready to dispatch), and MRO or consumables (welding rods, tools, lubricants). Each is valued and reported separately.
Why inventory needs managing
Too little stops production; too much ties up cash and space and ages into dead stock. Inventory management sets reorder levels and safety stock, tracks every receipt and issue, and values stock by FIFO or weighted average.
Example
A panel builder's inventory: breakers and busbar (raw material), half-wired panels (WIP), tested panels awaiting dispatch (finished goods), and cable ties and lugs (consumables).
