Why suppliers set an MOQ
A mill, moulder or powder-coating supplier has a fixed cost per run — setting up a die, changing colour, cleaning a line. Below a certain quantity that cost wipes out its profit. MOQs also come from pack sizes (a drum, a coil, a carton of 500) and from freight: a part-load costs almost as much as a full one.
Living with — and negotiating — MOQs
Compare the MOQ with your EOQ and real demand. If the MOQ is far above need, the extra stock carries interest, space and obsolescence cost. Options: agree a blanket order with staggered deliveries, pay a small surcharge for a smaller lot, share the order with a sister unit, use a distributor who breaks bulk, or standardise items so one MOQ serves several products.
Record the MOQ on the item or vendor master so purchase suggestions are rounded up correctly instead of being corrected by hand.
Example
You need 320 kg of a special RAL powder at ₹400/kg, but the MOQ is 500 kg. Buying 500 kg costs ₹2,00,000 instead of ₹1,28,000 — the extra 180 kg (₹72,000) sits in stock until the next order for that colour.

Frequently asked questions
What is the full form of MOQ?
Minimum Order Quantity.
What is the difference between MOQ and EOQ?
MOQ is the supplier's minimum; EOQ is the buyer's most economical order size. If the MOQ is higher than the EOQ, you have to order the MOQ.
Is MOQ negotiable?
Often yes — through blanket orders, higher price per unit, longer contracts or buying through a distributor.
Does MOQ apply to sales too?
Yes. Manufacturers set MOQs for their own customers, especially for custom or printed products.
