Services a logistics provider offers
Full-truckload and part-load transport, express parcel, warehousing and inventory holding, packing and labelling, last-mile delivery, reverse logistics for returns, and help with documents such as e-way bills and LR (lorry receipts). Many also offer tracking portals and proof of delivery.
How to choose one
Compare on lanes they actually serve, on-time record, damage and claim history, the type of vehicle and handling equipment they have, insurance cover, transit time, and the total cost including loading, detention and return charges — not only the per-kg or per-trip rate.
Keep the transporter, LR number and freight amount on each dispatch. Over a few months that record shows which transporter is on time, which damages goods and what freight really costs per order.
1PL to 4PL
| Type | Who it is | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 1PL | The business moves its own goods | A factory delivering with its own truck |
| 2PL | A carrier that owns the vehicles | A transporter hired per trip |
| 3PL | Outsourced transport, warehousing and handling under one contract | A logistics company running your depot and deliveries |
| 4PL | Manages the whole logistics operation, including other 3PLs | A lead logistics partner that plans and coordinates carriers |
