Quick answer
Employee PF = 12% of basic + DA. Employer PF = 12%, of which 8.33% (on wages up to ₹25,000, so at most ₹2,083 a month) goes to the pension scheme (EPS) and the rest to EPF. The wage ceiling rose from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 on 17 September 2026. EPF interest for FY 2025-26 is 8.25%.
| Wage ceiling | ₹25,000 a month (from 17 Sep 2026) |
|---|---|
| Employee share | 12% of basic + DA |
| Employer → EPS | 8.33% of wages up to ₹25,000 (max ₹2,083) |
| Interest FY 2025-26 | 8.25% |
The Employees' Provident Fund is a retirement savings scheme run by EPFO. Each month the employee and the employer each contribute 12% of basic pay and dearness allowance. The employee's 12% goes entirely to EPF; the employer's 12% is split between EPF and the Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS).
From 17 September 2026 the statutory wage ceiling is ₹25,000 a month (Gazette S.O. 5109(E)), up from ₹15,000 since 2014. That raised the maximum EPS share from ₹1,250 to ₹2,083 and brought employees earning up to ₹25,000 under mandatory PF. Rates and limits as of 12 October 2026.
The formula
- Employee contribution
12% × Basic + DA- Employer → EPS (pension)
8.33% × min(Basic + DA, ₹25,000)- Employer → EPF
12% × Basic + DA − EPS share- EPS pension (monthly)
Pensionable salary × Pensionable service ÷ 70
EPF employer contribution, worked out
Basic + DA of ₹30,000 a month: the employee pays ₹3,600. The employer also pays ₹3,600, of which 8.33% of ₹25,000 = ₹2,083 goes to EPS and ₹1,517 to EPF. So ₹5,117 a month is added to the EPF account, and ₹2,083 to the pension fund.
Many employers restrict both contributions to the wage ceiling, which here would mean 12% of ₹25,000 = ₹3,000 each. Choose this in the calculator if your pay slip shows PF on ₹25,000.
How the EPF balance grows
Interest is calculated on the monthly running balance and credited once a year. The rate for FY 2025-26 is 8.25%. The calculator adds contributions every month, credits interest at the year end and raises wages once a year by the increase you enter.
The projection assumes the same rate every year and no withdrawals — real interest rates are declared yearly by the EPFO's Central Board of Trustees.
EPS pension calculation
After at least 10 years of service, EPS pays a monthly pension from age 58: pensionable salary (the average of the last 60 months, up to the ceiling) × pensionable service ÷ 70. Members with 20 years or more get a two-year bonus on service. The minimum pension is ₹1,000.
Employees who joined after 1 September 2014 with wages above the ceiling at the time are not EPS members; their entire employer share goes to EPF.
Questions people ask.
What is the employer contribution to EPF?
12% of basic + DA. Of that, 8.33% of wages up to ₹25,000 (max ₹2,083) goes to EPS and the remainder to EPF.
What is the PF wage ceiling in 2026?
₹25,000 a month from 17 September 2026, raised from ₹15,000. Employees earning up to this are covered mandatorily.
What is the EPF interest rate for 2025-26?
8.25% per year, the same as the previous two years.
How is EPS pension calculated?
Pensionable salary × pensionable service ÷ 70, payable from 58 after at least 10 years of service, with a minimum of ₹1,000 a month.
Is PF deducted on gross salary?
No — on basic pay plus dearness allowance (and retaining allowance). Under the labour codes, allowances above 50% of total pay are added back to wages.
Can the employee contribute more than 12%?
Yes, through the Voluntary Provident Fund (VPF). The employer is not required to match it.
