The old objection to cloud ERP software in manufacturing was connectivity, and it was a fair one. It is much less fair now. What has not changed is the cost of the alternative: a server in a room behind the accounts department, an annual argument about backups, and a system that is only reachable from inside the building — which is precisely where the person who needs the number usually is not.

Being browser-based changes what the system is available for. What an on-premise server actually costs

The licence is the visible number and rarely the largest one. Behind it sits the machine, the operating system, the person who restarts it, the backup that is assumed to be running, and the upgrade that is postponed because the last one broke something. None of that appears in the comparison when the decision is being made, and all of it appears afterwards.

The failure mode is specific and common: the server is fine for four years and then it is not, on a day nobody chose, and the restore turns out to depend on a backup that stopped working some months earlier.

Access control matters more, not less

A system reachable only from inside the building has a crude but real security model: the building. Removing that makes proper role-based access essential rather than optional — a store keeper should see stock and not margins, a sales engineer should see their own customers, and a departing employee's access should end when they do.

That is a better model than the wall was, because it also works for the people inside the building, where most access problems actually originate.

Being honest about this: a browser-based system needs a working connection, and a plant with genuinely unreliable connectivity should say so early rather than discover it in week three. In most industrial areas that is no longer the constraint it was, but it is worth checking rather than assuming, and it is the first question worth asking on a demo call.
