TPM Full Form: Total Productive Maintenance
Definition
TPM stands for Total Productive Maintenance — a plant-wide approach in which operators, maintenance and management together aim for zero breakdowns, zero defects and zero accidents, with operators taking care of routine upkeep of their own machines.

The 8 pillars of TPM
1. Autonomous maintenance (Jishu Hozen) — operators clean, inspect, lubricate and tighten. 2. Planned maintenance — scheduled by maintenance on failure and wear data. 3. Focused improvement (Kobetsu Kaizen) — teams attack specific losses. 4. Quality maintenance — set machine conditions that prevent defects. 5. Early equipment management — design new machines for easy maintenance. 6. Training and education. 7. Safety, health and environment. 8. Office TPM — apply the same thinking to support functions.
5S is the foundation the pillars stand on: a clean, ordered machine shows leaks, loose bolts and wear early.
TPM and OEE
OEE is TPM's main measure. The six big losses — breakdowns, setup and adjustment, small stops, reduced speed, startup rejects and production rejects — map onto availability, performance and quality. Start with one model machine, restore it to basic condition, write a cleaning-inspection-lubrication checklist for operators, and track OEE weekly before spreading to other machines.
Example
A CNC turning cell had 14 hours of breakdowns a month. After a TPM pilot — daily 10-minute operator checks, fixed lubrication points and a planned maintenance calendar — breakdowns fell to 4 hours a month and OEE rose from 58% to 71%.

Frequently asked questions
What is the full form of TPM?
Total Productive Maintenance.
What are the 8 pillars of TPM?
Autonomous maintenance, planned maintenance, focused improvement, quality maintenance, early equipment management, training, safety-health-environment and office TPM.
What is Jishu Hozen?
Japanese for autonomous maintenance — operators doing daily cleaning, inspection, lubrication and tightening on their own machines.
How is TPM different from preventive maintenance?
Preventive maintenance is one activity done by the maintenance team; TPM involves everyone and aims at all equipment losses.
