Time limits under GST
Inputs must come back within 1 year and capital goods within 3 years (moulds, dies, jigs and tools are exempt from the limit). If not, the original dispatch is treated as a supply on the date it was sent, and tax with interest becomes payable.
Documents
The principal sends goods on a delivery challan, with an e-way bill where required. Details of goods sent and received back are reported in Form ITC-04 — half-yearly for turnover above ₹5 crore, annually for others.
Example
A fabricator sends 500 brackets to a galvaniser on a returnable challan on 5 May; they must return by 4 May next year, and the movement is reported in ITC-04.
